Social commitment
An
airport's success is measured not just in terms of business figures, but also
by the acceptance of the people around it. So AviAlliance not only assumes
responsibility for its own employees and those of the airports in its
portfolio, it also attaches maximum importance to passenger satisfaction,
passenger safety and security, and the quality of services at the individual
airports. In cooperation with them, we have therefore set ourselves the goal of
continuously improving the quality of services in order to offer passengers a
positive and safe travel experience.
In addition, we consider it important to promote a sense of partnership between
the airports and their neighborhoods. For many years, AviAlliance has therefore
supported social projects and institutions in the vicinity of the airports in
which the company is involved. In recent years, for example, we have supported
charitable organizations, schools and kindergartens in Athens, Düsseldorf, Hamburg and San Juan.
The
airports in the AviAlliance portfolio also take their social responsibility
seriously: in their regions, they form gateways to the world, they drive
economic development and represent important employers. As reliable partners
and responsible neighbors, the airports support their individual localities by
means of targeted initiatives, partnerships, donation programs and an active
dialog with local people in order to make a positive contribution to the region
concerned.
AviAlliance supports „Ukraine Crisis Airport Response“ fundraising campaign
In February 2022, the start of the Russian war against
Ukraine shocked the whole world. To support relief measures in Ukraine,
AviAlliance is participating in the "Ukraine Crisis Airport Response“
fundraising campaign organized by the industry association ACI EUROPE in
cooperation with the aid organization Airlink. Airlink is a non-profit
humanitarian logistics enterprise that, among other things, provides low-cost
or free flights and air transportation for aid organizations to get helpers and
relief supplies to where they are needed. More information here.
Together – For each other: Wish-tree event at Düsseldorf Airport
Under the
motto "Together - For Each Other", Düsseldorf Airport came up with a
very special Christmas event in 2023. It comprised a "wish-tree" carrying
the Christmas wishes of homeless people. This was set up for Christmas in
cooperation with the Düsseldorf association “Vision Teilen”. Airport employees helped
to fulfill the wishes, which were for such things as warm jackets, sleeping
bags and blankets. The initiative was also supported by AviAlliance.
Inclusion and Integration – AviAlliance and Hamburg Airport honor social projects
A total of
74 different projects from the Hamburg region applied for Hamburg Airport's
fifth Neighborhood Award in the three categories of Society and Social Affairs,
Culture and Sport, and Sustainability and Environment. Twelve of these
associations and institutions were awarded prize money totaling 12,000 euros.
AviAlliance traditionally donates the prize in the culture and sport category.
In 2023, the first prize in this category went to a project by Lenzsiedlung
e.V., which supports disadvantaged children and young people by offering them a
diverse range of sports activities.
The Athens International Airport community joins forces for a good cause
Athens International Airport held its fourth
"Plane-Pull" competition on the airport grounds in 2019. For this
charity event, 14 teams, each comprising 20 to 30 people, had to pull a Boeing
aircraft 20 meters across the apron. The airport donated the proceeds of the
event to the Greek children's aid organization "The Smile of the
Child".
Four-legged travel helpers at San Juan Airport
To make travel easier for passengers who suffer for example from fear of flying and to encourage conversation and interaction between travelers, San Juan Airport uses therapy dogs. Its "SJU Pawner" program was initiated in collaboration with the organization Puerto Rico Therapy Dogs, which trains dogs for use in, for instance, hospitals, lawcourts and retirement homes.
Düsseldorf and San Juan airports inspire young women to consider airport careers
Women are
still underrepresented in aviation, especially in technical professions. In
order to change this, Düsseldorf Airport has for some years been giving interested
girls the chance to gain exclusive insights into the various fields of activity
at the airport on "Girls Day". San Juan Airport also offers girls and
young women the opportunity to get to know various professions at the airport
and in aviation at the annual "Girls in Aviation Day" to inspire and
encourage them to consider a career in this industry.
Millions invested in noise abatement measures
All
AviAlliance portfolio airports demonstrate a sense of responsibility towards
their surroundings and strive to keep the noise pollution caused by airport
operations as low as possible. In addition to promoting the use of quieter and
more efficient aircraft, the airports use modern measuring systems to monitor
aircraft noise in detail. The aim is to reduce the noise impact on local residents
by means of targeted protective measures such as the installation of
sound-insulating windows. In the past decades, substantial eight-figure sums
have already been invested in this way.
Away for the holidays - vacation fun for children from sheltered living groups
Carefree days by the
sea or in the mountains – a vacation that not every child can take for granted.
Donations from AviAlliance and other institutions enabled children and young
people from a sheltered living group of the Düsseldorf Diakonie social and welfare
service to enjoy a holiday in Calais (France) in the summer of 2023. The
sheltered living groups run by the Diakonie Düsseldorf offer a safe place to
stay for children and young people who for various reasons cannot live with
their families.
Düsseldorf and Hamburg airports make travel easier for people with non-visible impairments
For people with a disability or condition that is not immediately
apparent, finding their way around an airport can be a real challenge. Düsseldorf and Hamburg airports are participating in the international "Hidden Disabilities
Sunflower" program that uses sunflower badges and lanyards to indicate a
condition that is not visible to others. The aim of the program is for those
affected to gain more understanding and patience from their fellow human beings
and to receive support from airport staff if required.
